Can Laughter Reduce Stress Levels In The Workplace?

Workplace stress is a major problem that's compounded by longer work weeks. According to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLR) 83% of Americans say they are stressed out by their jobs. But a recent study conducted by the University of Florida suggests the solution to workplace stress is laughter.

The study found a direct link with workplace "joking" and lower stress levels among employees. It's a common assumption by employers that laughing and joking equates to a lack of productivity. While excessive amounts may lower productivity, University of Florida researchers believe moderate amounts of joking can actually have the opposite effect by improving workplace productivity and overall employee morale.

Workplace stress impacts companies and businesses in several different ways. It lowers productivity, increases the risk of work-related injuries, lowers employee morale, creates tension among employees, and promotes a general negativity. All of these elements end up costing U.S. companies billions of dollars annually -- a bill that can be avoided by lowering stress levels.

Nearly 1 in 4 Americans view their job as the number one stressor in their life -- even more so than relationships, health, and finances. That's a pretty shocking statistic that should serve as an eye-opener to our nation's 144 million plus workforce.

In addition to incorporating laughter into the workplace, there are other steps you can take to reduce stress levels. Dr. Judith Orloff suggests focusing on yourself and what makes you happy, followed by making changes to your life. Far too many people go on "auto pilot," says Dr. Orloff, resulting in an endless cycle of day-to-day stress.

"You have to start with yourself, get some kind of semblance of happiness, and then move forward. And you have to have a goal of a lower-stress life, which means having an awareness about your stress level. People tend to just go on automatic pilot, so they don’t set their intentions to change their lives and make them more pleasurable," said Dr. Judith Orloff.

Laughter alone probably isn't going to miraculously stop all forms of stress in the workplace; however, it's a simple element that's a step in the right direction. The study cited above is just one of many that connects laughter to lower levels of stress. Humans have an innate desire to laugh, as it promotes the production of natural hormones that subsequently lower stress and make us happy.
