Do you work in an office? You aren't alone. Millions of Americans work in a commercial office. While working in an office has its advantages, it also has some disadvantages, one of which is the potential for chronic disease. You can maintain your health when working in an office, however, by following these six tips.

#1) Take the Stairs

Assuming you work in a second level or higher office, you should consider taking the stairs rather than riding the elevator. You'll burn calories and build muscle by taking the stairs. Furthermore, most office workers will agree climbing stairs boosts their energy levels.

#2) Skip the Snack Machines

Offices typically have snack machines, allowing workers to easily and conveniently satisfy their hunger cravings. Unfortunately, snack machines rarely offer nutritious snacks. They typically consist of junk food like potato chips, candy bars and soft drinks. Avoid the temptation of using your office's snack machine and, instead, bring your nutritious snacks from home.

#3) Stand Periodically

Try to get into the habit of standing periodically when working in the office. According to Forbes, office workers in the United States spend a staggering 15 hours on average sitting each day. When you sit for so many hours each day, it can leave you susceptible to chronic diseases like heart disease and obesity. By standing periodically, however, you can stay healthy when working in the office.

#4) Wash Your Hands

Commercial offices are a haven for germs. From doorknobs and telephones to desks and more, countless surfaces in offices are covered with germs. By washing your hands frequently -- using warm water and antibacterial soap, of course -- you can protect against transmissible illness like the cold and flu virus.

#5) Give Your Eyes a Break

If you're like most office workers, you'll probably spend a significant amount of your workday in front of a computer. Unfortunately, this can lead to eyestrain if you don't take the necessary precautions to prevent it. A good rule of thumb is to look away from the computer at least once every 20 minutes.

#6) Drink Water

It's tempting to drink soda, sweet tea or other sugary beverages when working in an office. While an occasional sugary beverage shouldn't cause harm, it can take a toll on your health if you drink them on a daily basis. Instead of sugary beverages, drink water when working in the office to promote better health.
