Energy-Saving Tips for the Home
Looking for ways to reduce your home's energy usage? Given the increasing cost of power and gas, many homeowners are searching for energy-efficient solutions. So today we're going to explore a few of the easiest and most effective ways to cut your energy costs and save money in the process.
Replace the Air Filter
Not every HVAC solution needs a professional technical. There are things homeowners can do themselves to keep their heating and air working properly, and subsequently, lowering their monthly energy costs. Among the easiest DIY solutions is changing the air filter, typically once every 30-90 days.
Energy-Efficient Lighting
Of course, another step you can take to reduce your home's energy usage is to install energy-efficient lighting. Granted, lighting may pale when compared to heating and air conditioning in terms of energy usage. Nonetheless, it still accounts for a significant portion of a typical home's energy usage. Rather than using traditional incandescent light bulbs, consider switching to energy-efficient alternatives like compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) or light-emitting diode (LED), both of which use a fraction of the energy of their counterpart.
Energy-Efficient Appliances
In addition to lighting, you should also invest in energy-efficient appliances. This includes a refrigerator, washing machine, clothes dryer, oven and dishwasher. It may cost some initial investment, but you'll save money in the long run with cheaper utility bills.
Wash Clothes with Cold Water
Many people assume that it's best to wash clothes with hot water, believing the hot water is more effective at removing dirt and cleaning fabric. However, cold water is just as effective -- and it doesn't require the use of a water heater. Therefore, you can cut down on your home's energy usage by washing clothes with cold water instead of hot water.
Adjust the Thermostat
Turning down your thermostat during the winter and turning it up during the summer can make a BIG difference in terms of your home's energy usage.
These are just a few ways to lower your home's energy usage.
