What Is a Fall Arrest System and How Does It Work?
Falls consistently rank as one of the most common causes of work-related injuries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), falls are responsible for up to 11% of all on-the-job fatalities. To safely work at elevated heights, however, you can use a fall arrest system. A fall arrest system will protect you from falling so that you are less likely to sustain injuries. What is a fall arrest system exactly, and how does it work?
Overview of Fall Arrest Systems
Also known as a fall arrest kit, a fall arrest system is a form of personal protective equipment (PPE) that lives up to its namesake by securing or "arresting" the user's body if he or she falls.
Most fall arrest systems consist of a few basic parts, including an anchor, a set of connectors and a body belt or harness. The anchor is a mount. The connectors are durable straps. The body belt or harness is a piece of wearable gear. With these items, you can safely work from an elevated height without fear of sustaining a fall-related injury.
Self-Retracting vs Shock Absorbing
There are two primary types of fall arrest systems: self-retracting and shock-absorbing. Self-retracting fall arrest systems feature a connector that's wound up inside of a housing component. They are often referred to as self-retracting lifelines (SSLs). Self-retracting fall arrest systems will provide slack when you move in the opposite direction. With that said, the connector will never be loose.
Shock-absorbing fall arrest systems feature a lanyard that's made of a webbing material. As their name suggests, they are able to absorb shocks. If you fall while wearing a shock-absorbing fall arrest system, it will absorb the shock by stretching. Therefore, your body will be exposed to less physical stress.
Benefits of Using a Fall Arrest System
If your job requires you from an elevated height, you should consider using a fall arrest system. While same-level falls are more common, elevated-level falls are typically more severe. If you from an elevated height, you could sustain a serious injury. A fall arrest system will protect you from fall-related injuries by securing your body in place.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires the use of fall arrest systems for certain jobs. Fall arrest systems are a form of PPE. And like with all forms of PPE, some jobs require them. You can learn more about OSHA's requirements by clicking here.
