Hats and gloves

Hats are extremely important when working in cold temperatures. About 40 percent of your body's heat can be lost through your head, so always wear a hat if it's below freezing in your workplace.

Extremities like fingers are the body parts most at risk for frostbite, so be sure to protect your hands by wearing gloves whenever possible.

Jackets and coveralls

Layering is key to preserving your body heat. OSHA advises that you should wear a light layer such as a wool or synthetic thermal to absorb sweat, followed by an insulating, thicker layer of the same type of fabric and topped with a waterproof jacket that will allow for light ventilation while protecting from rain or snow. Cotton materials will not insulate you from cold once they are wet, so avoid apparel made from this fabric.

You may also choose to wear insulated pants or coveralls if you work in extreme temperatures. Be sure that these items are amply warm and waterproof.
