Portable Ladder Safety Tips

Portable Ladder Safety Tips

A portable ladder is an invaluable tool for many professional workers. It allows them to reach elevated surfaces that would otherwise not be possible. Regardless of your occupation, though, you should follow a few basic safety precautions when using a portable ladder to reduce the risk of bodily injury.

Maintain 3 Points of Contact

The golden rule when using a portable ladder is to maintain 3 points of contact at all times. In other words, you should have both feet and one hand, or both hands and one feet in direct contact with the ladder. Failure to maintain 3 points of contact could result in you slipping and falling.

Engage Lock on Extended Ladders

If your portable ladder has an extension -- and you need to use that extension, be sure to engage the lock. Extended ladders feature a locking mechanism to secure the extension and prevent it from falling back down. Never use a ladder's extension without first engaging the lock.

Wear the Right Footwear

Don't underestimate the important of wearing the right footwear when using a portable ladder. If the steps on the ladder are slick, you could lose your balance and fall. Problems such as these are easily prevented, however, by wearing non-slip shoes or boots, and maintaining 3 points of contact at all times.

Check (and Follow) Weight Limit

All portable ladders feature a maximum weight capacity. Before using a portable ladder, check the weight capacity to ensure you don't overload it. Even if you weigh under this limit, bringing tools and equipment could make it go over.

Don't Place Books or Other Items Underneath a Ladder

Some workers place books and other items underneath a portable ladder to give them a few extra inches. In doing so, however, they create an unstable surface while increasing the risk of injury in the process. Never place any items -- books or otherwise -- underneath a ladder. If you need extra reach, use a portable ladder with an extension.

Watch for Electrical Hazards

Each year, thousands of workers sustain injury from electrical hazards in the workplace. When using a portable ladder, check above to ensure it's clear and free of electrical hazards such as power lines and cords.

These are just a few safety tips to help reduce the risk of injury when using a portable ladder.
