An Introduction to the Different Types of Space Heaters
Are you planning to buy a space heater? Whether it's for your home or business, a space heater can be a smart investment. It will create a more comfortable space by generating heat. While all space heaters generate heat, though, they are available in several different types. Below are some of the most common types of space heaters.
Ceramic
Perhaps the single most common type of space heater is ceramic. Ceramic space heaters are characterized by the use of a ceramic heating element. They are powered by electricity. As electricity flows through the ceramic heating element, heat is generated. A built-in fan will then push the heat out the front of the ceramic space heater.
IR
You may come across infrared (IR) space heaters. IR is another common type of space heater. Like ceramic space heaters, IR space heaters are powered by electricity. Both types of space heaters consume electricity during use. The difference is that ceramic space heaters use a heating element, whereas IR space heaters use an electromagnetic device.
IR space heaters essentially work by releasing electromagnetic waves. As these waves are released, they heat up nearby objects. IR is simply light that, upon striking the surface of an object, will heat it up.
Propane
There are also propane space heaters. Propane space heaters aren't powered by electricity. As their name suggests, they are powered by propane. You'll need to connect them to a liquid propane (LP) tank. During use, propane space heaters will burn propane fuel from this tank to generate heat.
Because they are powered by propane, propane space heaters aren't safe for indoor use. You should only use them outdoors where the byproduct gases can safely dissipate. Propane creates byproduct gases when burned. Some of these gases are toxic, such as carbon monoxide (CO).
Radiator
Finally, there are radiator space heaters. Radiator space heaters are characterized by a radiator-like design with hollow passages. They are still powered by electricity. Radiator space heaters use electricity to heat up the oil within their respective hollow passages. As the oil heats up, the radiator space heater will release "radiant" heat in all directions.
Not all space heaters are the same. Some of the most common types of space heaters include ceramic, IR, propane and radiator. Ceramic space heaters are among the hottest. IR space heaters are safe and easy to use. Propane space heaters are a great choice for outdoor spaces. And radiator space heaters are among the most energy efficient.
