Some equipment, like hard hats and fall protection harnesses, often comes with a manufacturer's expiration date and must be replaced after that time, even if it looks fine. For all other gear, it comes down to regular inspection. Teach your team to check their equipment before every use for signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, deep scratches, tears, or fraying. If a piece of equipment is damaged in any way, it can't do its job and must be taken out of service and replaced immediately.
My site has so many different jobs. How do I figure out exactly what gear each worker needs? A one-size-fits-all approach to PPE just doesn't work. The best way to handle this is to perform a hazard assessment for each specific task, not just the site as a whole. Walk through the steps of a job and identify all the potential risks. Is there a danger of flying particles, chemical splashes, or loud noise? Once you have a clear list of the hazards for a particular task, you can easily select the specific gear required to protect the worker performing it. This ensures everyone has the right protection for the job they are actually doing.
