How to Combat Work-Related Fatigue
Ever have one of those work days where you feel tired, groggy and fatigued? Sure you have; we all have. While an occasional "tired" day here and there shouldn't pose a problem, chronic fatigue can place you at risk for injury. Regardless of the industry in which you work, you should take certain precautions to stay alert while on the job.
The Problem of Work-Related Fatigue
Fatigue can impact a worker's performance and health in several different ways. According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, fatigued workers were nearly twice as likely to sustain an injury while on the job than non-fatigued workers. Fatigued workers have shorter attention spans and longer reaction times, which can prove downright dangerous in certain workplaces and industries.
Get a Good Night's Rest
Your first line of defense against work-related fatigue is sleep. While sleep requirements vary depending on gender, age, physical activity levels, and health, most experts recommend adults get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night. Unfortunately, though, less than half of the general population achieves this amount. When you don't get enough sleep at night, you are more likely to wake the following morning feeling tired and fatigued.
Take Breaks
Another helpful tip to combat work-related fatigue is to take breaks on a regular basis. Federal law requires employers give workers a break every so often, yet many ignore this law. As such, workers are more likely to become fatigued while on the job, which can open the doors to a whole new world of liability problems.
Wear the Right Shoes
No, that's not a typo. The right shoes can actually help to fight fatigue. When choosing shoes for work, make sure they have a soft cushioned insole to absorb pressure.
Drink Coffee
While this isn't a permanent solution by any means, drinking coffee can give boost your energy levels while fighting work-related fatigue. Caffeine acts a stimulant, speeding up your heart rate and increasing your energy. If you tend to feel tired during the early hours at work, try drinking a cup of hot Joe.
